CIVIL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION – CDO
After doing a survey, CDO decided to open Women Activity Center (WAC) for building women capacity in Kirkuk governorate and developing their skills so as to have more roles in the developing process . The establishment of the center funded by Solidarity International Andalusia (SIA)-Spanish international NGO. The center from its establishment sustains its work and creates relations with many organizations (Local and International). The center has a continuous course for developing women skills. Total direct beneficiaries of the center from its establishment were about (3,480) beneficiaries. The budget was $15,000.
2.Women Political Participation:
For discussing about women participation in political life and increasing the rate of women’s participation a workshop conducted which 19 women participated whom is staffs of women organizations and SCO. The workshop funded by Foundation for Promoting Democracy (FPD) with the amount of $2,100. It implemented in 2005.
3.Encouraging youth and women to participate in politics:
The main activity of this project was conducting (3) workshops in Kirkuk governorate for encouraging women and youth to participate in political life and election process. Each workshop was for 3 days; 20 representatives of organizations, journalists, media channel and government’s employee participated in each workshop. The project implemented as partnership with Amman Center for Human Right Studies (ACHRS). The project budget was $40.000.
4.Raising Awareness about Violence against Women
This project implemented as in partnership with Kurdish Human Right Watch (KHRW). The main activity of this project is conducting (2) days’ workshop in (2) different rural area. These subjects were given:”CEDAW convention, the identification of VAW and its kind, Gender and Group work from the participants to make open discussion about VAW and the best way of prohibiting it. The main objective of this project is raising awareness about women’s right and violence against women. In each workshop (25) women and men participated. The budget was $4,800.
5.Kurdistan Constitution Draft and Women’s Right:
The objective of implementing this project was submitting suggestions about women’s right and violence against women to Committee of Reviewing Kurdistan Constitution Draft. The constitution draft was declared by Kurdistan Parliament and there is a period of time to submit suggestions to make reviewing according it. The main activity of this project was conducting (8) workshops to collect the suggestions and after that submitting it to Committee of Reviewing Kurdistan Constitution Draft so as to have knowledge about the gaps which exist in the draft about women’s right and VAW. The organizations that implement the project hold a seminar to show the consequences of the workshops and they meet some parliament member in the Kurdistan Parliament to influence on Parliament Members toward reviewing the constitution articles according to the suggestions. This project implanted in partnership with Women Empowerment Organization (WEO) funded by Canadian International Development Agency. The budget of the project was $6,200.
6.Campaign of CSO for prohibiting violence against women:
This campaign established for advocating for women’s right and prohibiting VAW. The total numbers of the organizations which are members in this campaign are (50) organizations (27 from Erbil and 23 from Suly). The campaign start working on protecting women’ rights by Law. A committee from specialists in Law and activists in Human Right and women affairs has been established. The main task of the committee is writing a draft of Law about prohibiting VAW and submits it to Kurdistan Parliament. A conference holds on 9th June 2007 to discuss about VAW. The campaign also works for collecting data about women suicide, honor killing and domestic violence in Kurdistan. The data will be used to support the description of VAW. It worth me mentioned that this campaign first established for canceling the Iraqi interior ministry about issuing passport kind (G). The decision obliged women to get the agreed of caregivers for receiving a passport (G). The campaign successfully cancelled that decision. After that the campaign worked on (Dua’a)’s affairs. Dua’a was the girl that killed in a very wild way by more than 50 men because she had a love relation with a man. The video tape which recorded the way of her killing shocked every person in Kurdistan. The campaign participated in the demonstration of CSO to parliament of Kurdistan to demand punishing those whom participated in that crime. The budget of the campaign is form CDO income generation with the amount of $5,530.
7.Campaign for canceling the decision of Iraqi parliament “Al- Edda”:
CDO is one of the organizations that have being campaigning for canceling the decision of Iraqi Parliament about those women whom become widow which call in Arabic language “Al- Audda”. Al -Audda is obliged women to stay in her home and didn’t see anybody except her family members for 4 months and 10 days after dead of her husband. If the women who become widow were employee, her official should give her permission for that time. This decision is a kind of violence against those women whom become widow and its lead to disappearing of women in government officials. The budget of the campaign is form CDO income generation with amount $2,350.
8.Development through training & awareness:
This project had been linking three (3) important subjects for women in order to building their capacity. One of the activities is combating illiteracy by opening adult education courses; the other is for helping women to have an economic resource by learning her sewing and the third activities is teaching them computer to raising their capacity in this field so as to increase their chance to have a height position in their work. 154 women benefit from this project. This project implemented as partnership between CDO and Kurdish women organizations in Finland (Ziwar) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Finland. The budget of the project for 2007 is $13,210.
9.Preparing report about VAW and women suicide in Kurdistan:
CDO recently signed a protocol with Kurdish Human Right Project organization (KHRP) which it’s based in London. According to the protocol CDO will help and facilitate the work of KHRP in preparing a report about women suicide, honor killing and other kind of violence against women. The report will submit to Europe Union. The report will be one of the tolls which describe the rate and kind of VAW in Kurdistan. It will be a base for working and implementing projects. The budget provided by Kurdish Human Right Project (KHRP) with the amount of $3,800.
10.VAW questioner process:
CDO is partner of Foundation for Promoting Democracy (FPD) do a questioner process on Violence against Women. It implemented from May 28 to June 10, 2008. 800 Sample through questioner form. The form contain (40) different questions. (40) Data collectors participated. The budget of the project was 4,800 USD.
11.Arranging Around table on VAW:
On 12 Sep 2008 CDO with the coordination of Kurdish Human Right Project – KHRP and Harikar organization organized a round table for NGO working on VAW in Iraq, Iran and Turkey. The round table aims to share information about NGO that works in those country and make discussion about the strategic steps that implementing it lead to decrease VAW. The round table was the first step for forming a coalition aong the participated organization.
12.Gender-Based Violence Prevention, Mediation and Legal Services in Iraq:
This project implemented in partnership with Heart Land Alliance in Kirkuk Provinces. The aim of the project was presenting:
• Legal aid to women in detention center and shelters through a lawyer and represent them in front of the court.
• Medical care through weekly visiting to the detention center and cooperate with the hospital to present medical care.
• Social advice and mediation through a social worker.
• The duration of the project was 1 year, from Nov 1, 2008 to Sep 30, 2009.
13.Gender-Based Violence Prevention, Mediation and Legal Services in Iraq: Second Year
This project implemented in its second step in a partnership with Heart Land Alliance in Kirkuk Provinces. The aim of the project is presenting:
• Legal aid to women in detention center and shelters through a lawyer and represent them in front of the court.
• Medical care through weekly visiting to the detention center and cooperate with the hospital to present medical care.
• Social advice and mediation through a social worker.
• The duration of the project is 1 year, from November 1, 2009 – October 31, 2010.
14.Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Program
This project implemented in a partnership with International Rescue Committee “IRC”. The goal of the project is to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls in northern Iraq to gender-based violence (GBV) and mitigate the consequences for survivors through enhanced local mechanisms for prevention and response. CDO implements the prevention part of the program. The location of the program is “Suly city center and Syadsadiq and Arbat” district.
15.Prevent Violence against Women through mediation and increase awareness:
In the period of Jun 7th to Sep 23rd, 2010, the second phase of the project, “Mediating for Preventing Violence against Women”, CDO sustained the mediation process in the Faylaq project area through 20 of the mediators that participated in the first phase of the project. 20 Mediators selected from 30 depending on some selection criteria’s. The project activities started with strengthening the capacity of the mediator through 4 days training course. till the end of the project period 157 awareness sessions conducted. Through these awareness sessions our direct beneficiaries arrived to 2397 individuals. In balance with the aim of raising awareness, another aim of the awareness sessions was to be a way for the mediators to receive cases from the participants live. Therefore, the mediators could receive 107 cases where 103 social cases were solved, 3 legal cases referred and 1 is pending.
To make better influence on raising awareness to decrease violence against women, distributing brochures on women’s legal right and available aids that could be presented to her whenever she faces violence, will be helpful to decrease VAW, therefore 3000 brochures distributed among the population of the targeted area of the project.
16.’Gender-Based Violence Prevention, Mediation and Legal Services in Iraq: Third Year
This project implemented in its third year in a partnership with Heart Land Alliance in Kirkuk Provinces. The aim of the project is presenting:
• Legal aid to women in detention center and shelters through a lawyer and represent them in front of the court.
• Medical care through weekly visiting to the detention center and cooperate with the hospital to present medical care.
• Social advice and mediation through a social worker.
• The duration of the project is 9 months, from November 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
17.Healthy women healthy society:
The project designed as aim to work in both prevention and respond. The main activities are:
• Train the religious men and involve them in combating VAWG through explaining the real view of Islam religion toward women rights and using violence against women. The religious men will encourage people to be far from using violence. Each participant will specify at least one of his Friday speeches to speak about Islam view about women, the behavior of the Rasul “Muhammad” toward his women, and explaining how some have a wrong opinion and use religion in order to use violence against women.
• Present direct legal aid, social counseling and mediation for the survivors of VAWG.
• Strength coordination and cooperation among different service providers.
• Empower women through train them on self-consolidation.
• Awareness campaign on combating violence against women with international day of women and 16 days activism. The duration of the project is 11 months and supported by international rescue committee- IRC.
18.Panel on UNSCR 1325:
On Nov 1, 2011 on the 12th anniversary of the UNSCR 1325, CDO conducted a panel in Sulaimanyah province. The aim of the panel was making discussion about the attempts of the government and civil society organizations to implement this resolution in Kurdistan. Key recommendations collected in order to mobilize the efforts toward the implementation of 1325 in Kurdistan. The Members of the panel were: (Representative of Prime Minster office, representative of Ministry of Interior, commander of women force (Peshmarga), and general director of High Independent Electoral Commission, member of Women Commission in Kurdistan, NGO experts and a political observer. The Participants were (representatives of 10 police directorates, representatives of women force in Kurdistan army, representatives of 5 political parties, representatives of 15 local organizations, representatives of 2 international organizations, UNAMI political advisor and Media foundations).
