CIVIL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION – CDO

1.Delivering (116) seminars:
The main aims of conducting those seminars were raising awareness about democracy and its principles. The project funded by Solidarity International-Andalusia (SIA). The targeted areas of the project were Sulaimaniyah, Diyala and Kirkuk Governorates. The budget of the project was $18,000. It was implemented in 2003.

2.Peace Promotion Project – first step:
The aim of this project was spreading peace concept among various groups in the project area. The project funded by Swiss Labors Association (SLA) through Norwegian People’s Aid NPA. A group of pioneer trained on the concepts of civil society, democracy, human right, coexistence, solving problems without violence, the sovereignty of Law, etc. After finishing the course, the participants practically solved many problems in their area. The budget of the project was $15,000. It was implemented in 2003.

3.Democracy Dialogue Activity:
The aim of this project was raising awareness about democracy and human right principles; encouraging people to have civic dialogue; need assessment of the people and creating a channel between people and the authority to discuss their needs. The geographical area of the project was Sulaimaniyah and, Kirkuk Governorates. The project funded by Research Triangle Institute (RTI). 602 seminars and dialogue sessions were arranged. Approximately 17,000 participants including men and women attended. The budget of the project was $74,000. It was implemented in 2004.

4.Capacity building in NGO management and Democracy awareness:
(30) Organizations from (8) Iraqi governorates which are “Baghdad, Babel, Karbala, Diwanya, Basra, Diyala, Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah” participated in building capacity in NGO management and Democracy awareness. The subjects which were given ”NGO management, Writing Proposal, Monitoring, Evaluation, Role of NGO in the society, Democracy and Civil Society”. The duration of the course was (20) days; 5 hours lecture a day. The project funded by USAID – DAI. The budget of the project was $25,000. It was implemented in 2004.

5.Peace Promotion- Second Step:
The first step of this project implemented in August 2003 and the second step was implemented in February 2004. The project creates an active team from the inhabitants in the project area to encourage people to solve their problems according to Law. The main activities of this project was opening training course for (25) villagers whom have influence on the villagers and creating (4) teams from them to start practical work by spreading peace concept and solving the villagers’ problems without violence. The project funded by Norwegian people’s Aid (NPA). The budget of the project was $25,000. It was implemented in 2004.

6.Forming a network for monitoring election in Iraq:
In cooperation with Fredrich Ebert Organization and Popular Aid Organization (PAO) a network for monitoring election was formed. The network was monitoring election process in 17 governorates in Iraq. The budget of the project was $320,000. It was implemented in 2005.

7.Peace building between the IDPs who returned to Kirkuk and its inhabitants:
The aim of this project was to remove the tension between those IDPs returned to Kirkuk after fall of Iraqi regime and those who came to Kirkuk during the rule of previous regime. The project was multiple activities such as conducting workshops, doing seminars, art and sport activities. The duration of the project was 3 months from 1st Sep to 30th Nov 2005; funded by International Relief and Development (IRD). The budget of the project was $16,250. It was implemented on 2005.

8.Peace building in Kirkuk governorate:
The aim of this project was spreading peace among the various ethnic groups and living together in peace without violence. The project was multiple activities such as training on peace, conducting seminars, disseminating posters and distributing leaflets. The project funded by Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA). The budget of the project was $21,000. It was implemented in 2005.

9.Observing Iraqi referendum on constitution:
As an important member of Sun network CDO participated in monitoring the referendum on constitution. CDO participated with 1,320 observers. The budget of the project was $35,000 and funded by Amman Center for Human Right Studies (ACHRS). It was implemented in 2005.

10.Observing Iraqi Parliament Election:
On 15th Dec 2005 the election for electing Iraqi parliament members had bee done. CDO observed that process with 3,220 observer who worked with CDO voluntarily. The project supported by Amman Center for Human Right Studies (ACHRS) and (FES). The geographical area of the project was (Sulaimaniyah, Kirkuk, Salahalden and Diyala governorates). The budget was $350,000. It was implemented in 2005.

11.Capacity building of Iraqi LNGO:
NGO Committee Coordinator in Iraq (NCCI) in coordination with CDO opened TOT training course for (26) LNGO in Iraq. The course was for 2 weeks from 11 to 25 Nov 2006; 6 hours a day. First week these subjects were given “Monitoring and Evaluation, Coordination, Networking and Transparency” Second week was practical work for becoming trainer. NCCI and CDO cooperatively implemented the project. The budget of CDO was $8,900. It was implemented in 2006.

12.Capacity building of Iraqi LNGO- Second Course:
NGO Committee Coordinator in Iraq (NCCI) in coordination with CDO opened TOT training course for (26) LNGO in Iraq. The course was for 2 weeks from 5 to 19 Feb 2007; 6 hours a day. First week these subjects were given “Monitoring and Evaluation, Coordination, Networking and Transparency” Second week was practical work for becoming a trainer. The budget was $9,750. It was implemented in 2007.

13.En couraging youth and women to participate in political life:
The main activity of this project was conducting (6) workshops in Sulaimaniyah City, Halabja, Penjwen, and Said Sadiq districts for encouraging women and youth to participate in politics and election process. Each workshop was for 3 days; 20 representatives of organizations, journalists, media channel and government’s employee participated in each workshop. The project funded by Amman Center for Human Right Studies (ACHRS). The total project budget was $80.000. It was implemented in 2007.

14.Role of Civil Society in Reviewing Iraqi Constitution Process:
This project aimed to submit the CSO suggestions to the committee of reviewing constitution in Iraqi Parliament. CDO implemented the project in Sulaimaniyah governorate by conducting (2) workshops which (50) organization participated. The part of the suggestions is concerning article no 41 and putting articles about VAW in general and domestic violence in particular. This project implemented in partnership with Fredresh Ebert organization funded by UNOPS, European Union and United Nations With the amount of $6,700. It was implemented in 2007.

15.Integrated coexistence program for northern Iraq (ICPNI)- first step
The aim of this project was building a peaceful and harmony community via strengthening civil society elements and making CSOs to have initiative for social coexistence, mobilizing efforts for social development through Maximizing long-term sustainability through targeted training to the local NGO civil society sector and strengthening the peace coexistence and the social relations based on citizenship and sovereignty of law and civil society.
The geographical areas of the project were (Diyla, Kirkuk, Musel and Salahaldin) provinces. The duration of the project was 1 year from Feb 15, 2008 to Feb 14, 2009 and supported by United States of America – Embassy in Baghdad – Iraq. The project involved 100 CSOs and 50 media foundations in a big campaign that aimed to strengthen reconciliation in the project area. The project had multiple activities such as:

• Opening 6 TOT courses; 4 for CSO and 2 for Media foundations.
• Conducting 240 workshops on different topics.
• Holding 4 province conferences.
• Holding 1 regional conference.
• Writing 20 researches about peace making and reconciliation in Iraq.
• Producing and broadcasting Public Service Announcements (PSA).
• Producing and broadcasting TV and Radio programs.
• Designing 2 posters and distributing (40,000) copies of them.
• Finding a network under name “Peace Alliance”.
• The budget of the project was $881,962

16.Integrated coexistence program for northern Iraq (ICPNI)- Second step
The geographical areas of the project were (Diyala, Kirkuk, Musel and Salahaldin) provinces. The duration of the project was 4 months from Feb 1st to May 30th 2009 and supported by Relief International – ICCM program. The project involved 50 CSOs and 25 media foundations in a big campaign that aimed to strengthen reconciliation in the project area. The project had multiple activities such as:
• Opening 3 TOT courses; 2 for CSO and 1for Media foundations.
• Conducting 110 workshops.
• Holding 1 regional conference.
• Producing and broadcasting Public Service Announcements (PSA).
• Producing and broadcasting TV and Radio programs.
• Designing 1 posters and distributing (10000) copy of them.
• Founding a network under name “Peace Alliance”.
• The budget of the project was $210,178

17.Integrated coexistence program – UNOPS – Kirkuk
The project aim to identify inhabitant’s needs and advocate on it for responding the needs and in the same time work on peace and coexistence among different nations and religions among the inhabitants of Domez area in Kirkuk city. The main activities of the project were doing a participatory rapid appraisal process in the project’s area. 5 teams from the volunteers created and they worked under supervision of lead facilitator. At least 400 families participated in the PRA. Conducting 4 meetings with the inhabitants so as to present the result of the PRA to the inhabitants and make a list for the priorities and preparing a report about the priorities. The project also works for strength peace via doing other activities.

18.National Reconciliation through Constitution Review and National Dialogue in Iraq:
The project aims to find and create a fruitful dialogue among the dispute groups in Kirkuk province “including community leaders, political parties leader and province and parliament members with youths and mass people” about the essential issues which is important for all of the nations and groups such as distributing proceeds of natural resources in federal governments, minority rights and situation and lack of services. The project is implementing in a partnership with UNOPS. The project is multiple activities such as conducting community meetings; workshops, seminars, debate sessions and conference so as to collect information about distributing natural resources in Iraq. The information will be use for writing a report which will be submitted to Iraqi parliament; Kurdistan parliament; UN agencies. The project budget is 29,713 USD.

19.Youth combating drugs
The project aims to maintain the communication, interaction and increase the capacity of 13 cadres and enable them to strength peace spreading tolerance spirit among youths via linking combating drugs with working for peace. The main activities were:
A TOT course opens on combating drugs and building peace for the 3 cadres whom supervised the PRA in the first phase of the project. The course will last for 4 days.
An empowerment course opens for 10 youths by the cadres to strengthen their capacity in combating drugs and building peace. The duration of the course will be for 4 days; 5 hours a day.
Conduct 3 vocational training courses for 30youths of both genders to teach them theoretically and practically 3 professions which are “hairdresser, carpentry and mob maintenance”.
Produce; distribute and hung 500 posters for encouraging people to avoid using drugs.
Produce; print and distribute 1000 leaflets among the families that exist in Domez for combating drugs.
Five (5) round table dialogues arranged for 100 youths to talk about peace; avoiding use of violence and combating drugs. The round table dialogues will lead by the youths whom already participated in the empowerment course.
15 income generation projects was funded with financial support; each project with buying equipments with 750 USD.
The project implemented in a partnership with UNOPS; funded by federal republic of Germany.

20.Seminar on Role of NGO in building Democracy in Kurdistan- Stockholm October 2010
CDO in cooperation with Kurdistan Culture Center conducted a seminar for CDO projects coordinator about the Role of NGO in building Democracy in Kurdistan. The seminar focus on 5 poles; the draft of NGO law; NGO budget and finance issue; Independence and neutrality; freedom and capacity of the NGO.The researcher ended his speech with the recommendations that it needs for better participation of the NGO in building democracy and pass the obstacles in the end of the seminar there was fruitful discussion between the with the researcher and the participants.

21.Conflict assessment as a stage for conflict management
The project aims to train a cadre on conflict assessments and able them to map and identify the stakeholders and complex relationships of the conflicts. The main activities were train 3 cadres for 2 weeks on conflict assessment; assess 2 conflicts that exist in Kirkuk and prepare assessment reports and share them with the concern sides of the conflicts. The project implemented in partnership with UNOPS; funded by federal republic of Germany.
